Pros and cons of TomTom France app for iPhone and iPad

TomTom France app good for

Ive yet to see how much this cost for roaming charges on my ipad, but the darn thing worked super well all throughout France and had some really obscure roads marked (even gravel ones). Worth the cost...
I drive and travel in France every year and this is the first time I had GPS. We used our IPhone 3Gs. It worked beautifully except for one time in 3 weeks, When it mis-directed us to a different location. Not Bad! A few things I noticed: when using it, if you can put it up on the dash to get a better read from the satellite, it worked much better than on the seat beside me. On the dash I received less false readings, and if I did get one, it only lasted a few seconds. Given this, I would recommend the optional stand that you can attach to the dash. We taped ours to the front of the dash and it worked pretty well. The optional stand would also hold it very securely, give you a good signal and allow you to play music as well. We turned all the roaming features off in the phone and it didnt affect the GPS performance. This was one of my concerns, but not a problem in the end. I liked the fact that it warned you of upcoming radar speed control points, so you wouldnt get a ticket. It also has a feature where you can tell it to assume you are walking instead of driving and that helped for navigating cities on foot. I really liked the fact that on the screen it counts down to warn you of upcoming turns and the time to destination feature also was pretty darn accurate. It was even smart enough to know when we were going next to median strips in the middle of the road and showed them on the screen- very impressive. We used it in cities and out in the country and it worked well everywhere. Overall, I highly recommend that you buy this for travel in France by car. We didnt want to buy an additional GPS to unit to take with us. I might even consider a Tom-Tom GPS for my personal car because of how well this worked.
Currently I am in France on vacation. This app has proven to be well worth the money. It has navigated us to, in my mind, obscure locations. (We are spending most of our time in the Loire Valley). After flying in, it even navigated me out of the airport complex. This was a god send to a weary traveler. The car I rented has a built in nav unit which I dont even use anymore because it doesnt compare to this app. I will probably buy the US version when I get back. One thing to note is that having an Internet connection is useful to find the addresses of places that the apps database may not have. But once you have the address all you need is satellite signal and you are good to go.

Some bad moments

Well, in all of Paris and Burgundy this app could not ever find a GPS signal, no matter how long we tried outside and inside. Huge waste of time trying to make it work on our vacation, and at the end - thank goodness we had a book and a paper map. Cant be relied on - so of no use. We had another app for the specific attraction on our iPad, which cost 2.99 and that one worked fine and had no problem finding satellite signal. Dont waste your money and time.
